Located at 83 Shore Street, William Bliss Carman was born in this house on April 5th, 1861.
We have placed his poem "The Last Room" at this location because although Carman was born and raised in Fredericton, he spent much of his adult life in the United States. The poem is a goodbye to a home which contains many memories for the speaker, who is simultaneously sad to leave and excited to broaden his worldview. Carmen returned frequently to Canada, and Fredericton in particular, but never truly settled back into his hometown.
The Bliss Carman House has been recognized as a Historical Place by the Canadian Register.
